Mullane, who recently quit his job making television commercials for big brands to pursue more creative film-making, was at the Domain on Sunday night to see and hear reaction to his entry, Red Nuts.
"Usually when I watch one of my films in front of people I freak out and can't pay attention, but this time I was really switched on. The parts that I thought were meant to be funny were being laughed at. It was great," Mullane said.
The film follows a flame-haired protagonist through a challenging time and tackles a much-referenced question: what would you do with your life if you knew you were dying?
Mullane, one of four brothers, credits his free-spirited upbringing for his creative perspective.
The family spent several years travelling around Australia in a caravan before settling on a farm at Stanwell Tops, where the family runs horses.
A former professional rugby player, Mullane hopes to leverage his Tropfest success to build interest in his next film project, a feature.
