A truck driver was trapped in his cabin for more than an hour on Saturday afternoon after a ute allegedly veered into the semi-trailer and caused it to collide with a BlueScope rail bridge around 4pm.
The crash damaged the base of the bridge.
The Transport Management Centre said emergency bridge works would close one northbound lane on Five Islands Road near Flinders Street. The speed limit would be reduced to 40km/h in the area.
‘‘One northbound lane will remain closed until at least Friday, December 12, while repairs take place,’’ the TMC advised.
The bridge, used by trains servicing BlueScope, has been assessed and engineers are being contracted to undertake repairs.
‘‘The bridge belonging to BlueScope sustained some damage to a concrete pier,’’ a BlueScope spokesman said.
‘‘The travelling public and bridge itself are not in any danger, as the structural integrity of the bridge remains intact. BlueScope engineers are organising repairs to the concrete and hope to have this completed as soon as possible.’’
The driver of the truck was taken to Wollongong Hospital with a fractured femur and head lacerations.
