It is a perfect late-spring day in Melbourne, the sort of day when anything seems possible, and Bill Shorten is in a buoyant mood. At a meeting of advocates for people with disabilities, he talks about making Australia a fairer and more inclusive society. "There are 500 sleeps until the next federal election," he says. "Well, roughly." Outside in the sunshine, he throws his arms around his social policy adviser, Max Jeganathan, who is heading back to Canberra. Jeganathan smiles uncertainly: he says he thought he only got a hug on his birthday.
