Victims of house fires are often left with just the clothes on their back and struggling for help.
That's where the Fire Foundation comes in - Australia's only national charity dedicated to assisting people affected by fires, including burns victims. It provides emergency assistance such as food, clothing, toiletries, accommodation, a 24-hour support line and counselling, as well as fire safety education.
The Charles Hotel in Fairy Meadow is holding a family fun day this Saturday, December 20, for the foundation. From noon-4pm there will be a barbecue, jumping castle, fairy floss, gladiator ring, cake stall, face painting, a fire truck and Santa handing out presents.
Entry is free.
Charles Hotel assistant manager Melina Elcheikh said the Fire Foundation was a good cause.
"There would be nothing worse than being burnt or losing your home," she said.
Fire Foundation founder Jodee Wyatt and her family lost their Brisbane home in a fire seven years ago.
"We're trying to get a message out, check your smoke alarms, make an evacuation plan," she said.
Ms Wyatt advised keeping wallet, mobile phone and car keys next to your bed - easily accessible if a fire started.
