Some of the most talented tradespeople in the nation have picked up shovels and paintbrushes to beautify Mount Keira Lookout.
The entire 29-strong WorldSkills Australia squad, from a range of trades and skilled professions, descended on Wollongong's iconic mountain-top park on December 5 to help Rotarians, Wollongong City Council and TAFE Illawarra enhance the scenic spot.
The squad, which includes six representatives from the Illawarra and a total of 10 from Rotary District 9675 (Greater Sydney, Macarthur and Illawarra), painted fences, cleared weeds, installed bench seats and fixed walls.
It was their first meeting as a team and part of a training camp at Wollongong Surf Leisure Resort in Towradgi from December 4-7.
"The training camp in Wollongong is an important first step in the preparation of the Skills Squad for international competition," WorldSkills Australia chief executive Mark Callaghan said.
"To be able to use their world-class skills while supporting the local community is the perfect way to do this and we look forward to working with the project partners to leave a legacy of the squad's time in Wollongong."
The team will compete at the 43rd WorldSkills Competition in Sao Paulo, Brazil, in August 2015.
Rotary District 9675 vocational service chairwoman Dot Hennessy said the district was raising funds for the WorldSkills squad through the Adopt-a-Skillaroo program.
Mrs Hennessy said Wollongong Botanic Garden curator Paul Tracy was very grateful for the squad's work at Mount Keira.
"He told them that they had saved him over $20,000 ... they really pitched in."
