With words like imputation and linear mixed models, even Daniel Tolhurst admits his honours topic might not mean much to the average person.

But here's a simple equation - the University of Wollongong graduate is the first Bachelor of Medical Mathematics (Honours) student to pull on a blue robe and don the mortar board.
"It's very humbling, I'm very pleased," Daniel said of the achievement.
Continuing the game of numbers, Friday's ceremony was the second graduation for the 25-year-old from Kiama.
Daniel received a testamur for his bachelor degree two years ago - again an achievement he was the first to complete.
"The medical maths degree is really good because you get a real broad range of jobs out of it and you can hone into a specific field," Daniel said. "I've gone down more the applied stats in ag sciences [career path]."
Daniel has scored a job at UOW next year as a part of the Statistics for the Australian Grain Industry project.
The medical mathematics degree is new to the university and Daniel urged anyone who liked statistics to give it a go.
"For new students who are looking for a maths degree, this is certainly one to look out for."
