Gemaya Simpson, Be Designed
I started my business in December 2012. I always wanted to have a creative job but I also knew I wanted to be my own boss so setting up my own business was a good fit.
I do property styling, interior design and event styling. I've had people ask me to style their kitchen or bathroom but I also do some retail and commercial design too.
I've styled everything from weddings to birthday parties as well. I really aim to be a "one-stop shop", particularly for things like weddings. Clients can hire items off me, I design their stationery, set the venue up and then do the flowers so I'm really involved in the whole creative process.
I meet with clients right from the start to find out what they want, I really focus on creating a personalised experience.
Every day is different. I can be doing anything from designing interior projects, photographing items for my hire collection, working on ideas, making things for upcoming events or meeting with clients. It's a real mixed bag and it's always on the go, which I really enjoy.
People always say to me "oh, you have such a fantastic job" and I always agree. I actually love my job. Every day is different and I never get bored.
Offering so many different services means my days are really varied so it keeps it interesting. I'm lucky I get to do something that's my passion.
My job isn't 9 to 5, it's more like 24/7. It has its advantages and disadvantages - it means I'm always thinking about ideas and you never know when inspiration will strike but it also means you never really turn your brain off. But I've always felt that because it's something I love, I never find it a problem.
The work can be very stressful because you're such a big part of someone's special day and you want everything to go well. But it's a great moment when you get to see all your creative ideas come together, I can't describe it. It definitely makes all the hard work worthwhile.
