New Warilla young gun Greg Jeans knocked out nine-times South Pacific champion John Green in Sunday's sectional round of singles at Fairy Meadow Bowling Club.
Two-time singles champion Green shares the record of carnival crowns with nine alongside Shane Garvey, but was beaten 25-11 by "Generation Next" star Jeans in their opening match in section 22.
Jeans, who helped Warilla win the NSW Champions League earlier this year and will join the Gorillas in pennants next season, won all three games to clinch a spot in Wednesday's post-sectional round.
Taren Point-based Green won only one of his three games, while 18 Illawarra clubs hosted 224 bowlers filling 56 sections of singles.
It was a good day for the young gun brigade, with Cabramatta's highly-regarded Corey Wedlock (3wins+32), Mt Lewis' Ben Glasson (3wins+31), Taren Point's Jake Chapman (3wins+38), Thirroul's James Jones (3wins+20) and Dubbo star Jono Davis (2wins+21) winning their sections.
Wiseman Park's Steve Haines was the biggest winner, with 3wins and a whopping +61 shot differential, while one poor bowler failed to win an end, losing 25-0.
At Figtree RSL, Towradgi lower-grade pennant player Ian Bridge caused a boilover beating former clubmate Mal Lyons (Wiseman Park) 25-10, on his way to winning section 29.
On an adjacent rink, The Orb's Andrew Spriggs clinched one of the closest sections with two wins, but with just a +4 differential.
It was even tighter for Dapto Citizens' Noel Davis, who won his first game by a shot, lost his second by four and took section 53 by winning his third match by three shots.
Four-times singles champion Shane Garvey (3wins+55) was among the most impressive winners, in a section which included new Warilla signing Jamie Turner.
Former Oak Flats and Warilla member Matt McIntyre won the pairs title with Aaron Teys last year before heading to Dubbo.
McIntyre showed his liking for the carnival, winning his three games at Albion Park.
Day three of the carnival continues on Monday with 51 sections of pairs.
