Anthony Condon was riding with a number of other cyclists from the Byron Bay Cycle Club when an out-of-place aluminium bar forced his wheel to lock up, which caused his body to flip over the handlebars onto the side of the road.

 

Condon was travelling at about 50 km/h and was extremely lucky to have avoided serious injury - not only from the fall but from the danger of oncoming traffic running him over as he lay on the road.

He only suffered minor cuts and bruises to his body.

Nick Smith was riding behind Condon when he flipped off his bike, managing to avoid serious injury by swerving around Condon with a fast reaction time.

Fellow rider Jason Hardy uploaded the video to YouTube on December 31, and it has since been viewed over 600,000 times.

Condon explained on Facebook how his beloved bike was ruined after the heavy fall.

"Thanks to all the well wishers, a ride I would rather forget, but in light of the horrendous possibilities that could have been the outcome of this accident I count myself very lucky indeed," Condon wrote on his Facebook page. "My beautiful Canyon will race no more, but I have my health which is not always retained after these accidents.

"I have had time to contemplate on what is important in life and will always appreciate my family, friends and cycling in that order."
