NSW Meals on Wheels network support officer Godfrey McCormick was among those who attended, as was Lord Mayor Gordon Bradbery.
Founding member Betty Huxley said Wollongong Meals On Wheels began in 1964 following a suggestion from Wollongong Catholic Bishop Thomas McCabe.
‘‘He suggested to the Catholic Women’s League the formation of the Wollongong Meals on Wheels service be their community project for the year.
‘‘A committee was formed and groups were organised on a roster basis covering Corrimal to Figtree.’’
Mrs Huxley said the service began delivering 17 meals per day in stainless steel bain-maries on January 18, 1965, and had continued since.
Volunteer Paul Evans has been involved with the service for 3 years.
‘‘It was always something I knew I wanted to do,’’ he said.
‘‘When I retired I decided to volunteer to help out and it was something I really enjoyed.’’
Wollongong Meals on Wheels comprises 150 volunteers who deliver more than 140 meals a day to elderly clients.
