A BOY, 7, has died after the car he was travelling in crashed along Medowie Road at Williamtown Wednesday afternoon.
Police said the boy was travelling in a Nissan Pathfinder driven by a 35-year-old man south along Medowie Road, near Fighter World, about 4.10pm.
The vehicle had three other children inside, with all four aged between seven and 14 years old.
Police said the driver approached banked up traffic near the intersection of Nelson Bay Road when it is believed he drove the four-wheel-drive along a grass section of road to the left of the waiting traffic.
The driver lost control of the car near a gully and the four-wheel-drive became airborne and impacted heavily on the opposite side.
The seven-year-old boy, seated in the rear of the car, suffered serious internal injuries and was taken to John Hunter Hospital.
He died in hospital.
The man and three other children were also taken to hospital with minor injuries.
The 35 year old driver was subject to mandatory blood and urine samples.
A crime scene was established and investigators from the Hunter Crash Investigation Unit along with Port Stephens police attended.
Traffic in the area was disrupted for six hours.
A report will be prepared for the information of the Coroner and investigations are continuing.
