As chief executive of the National Institute of Dramatic Arts, Ms Williams has made a number of contributions in the area of art and culture.
Lord Mayor Gordon Bradbery said Ms Williams' achievements, as well as her Wollongong upbringing, made her the perfect ambassador for the occasion.
Cr Bradbery said he was pleased to have chosen Ms Williams as Wollongong's ambassador for the landmark event.
"Wollongong has always had a spot close to my heart," Ms Williams said.
The ambassador's two biggest responsibilities for the event include speaking at the citizenship ceremony and presenting the Australia Day Awards.
"The award ceremony is always a humbling evening, we are able to hear the achievements of our communities' role models and are reminded that you are never too young to make a contribution and give up your time," Ms Williams said.
The award winners, including citizen of the year, were announced at a celebratory dinner on Thursday, January 22.
The winners will also be recognised on Monday, January 26, during the day's entertainment on the main stage at Lang Park.
Most Australia Day events set for Monday morning will take place in Belmore Basin, including the annual aquathon and community walk.
"In my opinion, this is one of the most beautiful spots in the world," Ms Williams said.
"If you grew up in Wollongong, you can sometimes take for granted how close and accessible the harbour is.
"Having the activities centred here is perfect as it represents what is so beautiful about our country".
