Regional Tourism Minister John Barilaro said the funding confirmed the event as the region’s leading annual air show.
“The air show is important to the region’s community and economy with an expected 11,000 visitors from outside the region this year who will inject an estimated $1.7million to the NSW economy,’’ he said.
For the first time since it took off in 2007, Wings Over Illawarra will be held over two days.
Event spokesman Andrew Herring said the two-day format would give more people an opportunity to visit while also spreading out the impacts of traffic on the area.
It benefits the local community but also increases the overnight stays, he said.
‘‘We’re very confident that we’ll see strong support for the event from people outside of the region as well as locals, in fact we’ll probably see more visitors to the region.’’
The same flying program will run over both days, giving visitors a chance to take in all the action and exhibits in a leisurely fashion.
Tickets, including two-day passes, are now on sale through Ticketek at an early bird discount.
Wings Over Illawarra will be held on May 2 and 3 at Illawarra Regional Airport, Albion Park.
