Holiday traffic was delayed at the usual Princes Highway pinch points, with northbound motorists queued five kilometres on approach to Berry shortly after 2pm.
Traffic near Gerringong was queued six kilometres at the same time.
By 4pm, the heavy traffic had eased in both locations.
Earlier, motorists in both directions were affected by an oil spill on the Princes Highway near South Kiama Drive.
Lanes were closed both ways shortly after 10am and the speed limit on remaining lanes reduced to 40km/h as emergency services worked to soak up the spill.
The highway reopened just after 1pm and heavy traffic conditions eased about an hour later.
A broken-down car closed one northbound lane of the M1 Princes Motorway near Clive Bissell Drive at Cataract about 3.20pm, but the car was quickly towed from the scene.
