Stage two of the Shone Avenue upgrades are well under way in West Dapto, just weeks out from the expected reopening.
On January 19, Wollongong City Council contractor Abergeldie Contractors Pty Ltd planned to lay 72 bridge planks, measuring 16 metres and weighing about 12 tonnes each, for the concrete bridge.
The work was described as a crucial point of the road upgrade and was expected to take up to 12 hours to complete.
Wollongong Lord Mayor Gordon Bradbery said the bridge was the next piece of the road network upgrade, part of the West Dapto Initial Access Strategy.
"When complete, this road will provide safer and flood- improved access between Wongawilli and Horsley," Councillor Bradbery said.
"We understand that locals have been inconvenienced by the road closure, but this has been essential to allow the contractor to complete the works."
If good weather permits, the road will reopen in February, increasing access points to West Dapto via Shone Avenue, Bong Bong Road and Cleveland Street.
Cr Bradbery said the project was vital for Dapto, which has so much potential for growth.
Despite the road reopening next month, work on the Shone Avenue upgrade is planned to continue until mid-2015.
