Police claim Dylon Triggs of Leumeah, and Samantha Chandler, of Macquarie Fields, made off with the jet ski and a trailer on Saturday night, keen to test the ski out on the lake.

When officers spotted Triggs' car towing the jet ski, they asked him to pull over.

But instead, he allegedly swerved into a nearby lane, cut in front of an ambulance, and sped off.

Police chased the car but Triggs eventually mounted a gutter, jumped out of the vehicle and fled.

He was quickly arrested.

Opposing Triggs' application for bail in Port Kembla Local Court on Monday, police prosecutor Ashlea Jacob said the 30-year-old posed an unacceptable risk and had endangered the community's safety.

Police facts tendered to the court said Triggs and Chandler, 22, were at Triggs' house on Saturday when they decided to travel to the Illawarra.

The pair drove to Barrack Heights where they allegedly removed a set of number plates from a car.

Police claim they then drove to Lake Illawarra where they spotted the jet ski loaded on a trailer.

Whiel the jet ski's owner was sleeping nearby, the pair allegedly attached it to the back of Triggs' car.

The pair were driving along the Primbee bypass when police spotted them.

As officers activated their warning lights and signalled for Triggs to pull over, he allegedly swerved into the adjoining lane.

Police claim he then swerved into a turning lane and accelerated away from police.

Triggs then turned on to a dead-end street where he accelerated harshly before mounting the gutter and stopping.

He allegedly jumped out of the car but was arrested nearby.

It was only then that police allegedly spotted Chandler sitting in the passenger seat.

Both were charged with with two counts of larceny.

Triggs also faces counts of police pursuit, using an unregistered vehicle, displaying unauthorised licence plates and driving under the influence of drugs.

Chandler allegedly told police she had no knowledge of the offences, claiming Triggs had picked her up with the jet ski already attached to the car.

During Triggs' bail bid, Sgt Jacob claimed the accused was likely to commit other offences and faced jail time.

She told the court Chandler had a lengthy criminal record and was unemployed.

Defence solicitor Laura Fennell, representing the pair, said Triggs had had some difficulties with a relationship breakdown, issues with his children and his methamphetamine use.

She told the court he needed bail to get into a residential rehab facility and could live with his parents.

Ms Fennell said Chandler wanted her liberty to see her children start school and had strong community ties.

She said the young mother could provide a surety and would report to police.

Registrar Cally D'arcy refused the pair's bail until Tuesday.
