All southbound lanes have reopened on South Dowling Street in Kensington after a three vehicle accident at the Eastern Distributor Exit.
Although the accident occurred at 6.30am and lanes have since reopened, a nine-kilometre gridlock ensured very little movement through the Eastern Distributor and Sydney Harbour Tunnel, going as far back at North Sydney.
As of 9.30am traffic was still "heavy" in the area but has returned to "normal peak volumes" according to a Transport Management Centre spokesperson.
Meanwhile, there is heavy southbound traffic on the Gore Hill freeway at Atarmon.
The TMC spokesperson said motorists should allow plenty of additional time, avoid the area and exercise extreme caution when driving on wet and potentially dangerous roads.
