The crossing is outside Coledale Public School on Lawrence Hargrave Drive and has been a source of concern for the community for a decade.

A large part of their concern was the location of the crossing on a rise which made it difficult to see, despite the presence of other warning markers.

In April 2013, 74-year-old Frank Honiball died when he was hit by a car on the crossing.

Late last year the government announced $620,000 for traffic lights to be built at the nearby intersection of Lawrence Hargrave Drive and Rawson Street.

The lights will replace the zebra crossing, providing a safer place for students to cross the road.

The work started earlier this month, so the noisy parts of the project could be completed before school resumed.

A Roads and Maritime Services spokesman said the work had taken longer than expected due to wet weather but added the lights were on track to be switched on "later next month".

"Roads and Maritime has installed a temporary crossing refuge at the intersection until the work is complete and [has also] implemented a 40km/h speed zone on Lawrence Hargrave Drive," the spokesman said.

"A Roads and Maritime school crossing supervisor is also in place to ensure students and parents can safely cross the road during school zone times."
