Emergency services were called to the steelworks around 2.35pm following reports a male worker had caught his hand in machinery.
‘‘Upon arrival we found that the patient had been freed from the machine and relocated within the steelworks,’’ Ambulance NSW Illawarra duty operations manager Inspector Norm Rees said.
‘‘On examination we found the 46-year-old male had a crush injury to his right hand with fairly significant damage ... it was partially amputated.’’
It is believed the man received the injury while trying to retrieve an item that had become stuck in a roller.
He was treated by Ambulance NSW paramedics on scene, before being airlifted to Sydney Hospital’s hand unit in a stable condition, for specialised treatment.
