He's already been pencilled in as Jarryd Hayne's successor at fullback for NSW but there's no guarantee Josh Dugan will even wear the No 1 jersey for the Dragons, according to coach Paul McGregor.
McGregor master-minded Dugan's successful switch to the centres for NSW and the Dragons last year and hinted on Friday that he's not ready to give up on the experiment just yet.
Dugan will return to fullback for Saturday's Charity Shield and is widely tipped to remain there come round one, but McGregor said he's still undecided about where he'll deploy his most potent attacking weapon in 2015.
"I haven't settled on anything yet," McGregor said.
"He's very team-first Duges and he's the type of guy who'll do whatever suits our game.
"We've still got Peter Mata'utia who's been doing a lot of right centre, left centre and fullback. How they both go over the next couple of weeks [will determine] who plays round one.
"Josh has done most of his work the past couple of weeks at fullback and I want to see how he goes there. It's a good opportunity for Josh to go out there and play extended minutes against a very good roster, and Pete will get his chance too."
Just who fills the vacancy left by Brett Morris on the left wing could determine where Dugan plays given his physical presence on kick return. Dylan Farrell has emerged as a contender for a wing berth after being named on the flank for the clash with his former club.
McGregor said the 25-year-old will also spend time in the centres as he looks to bounce back from a luckless 2014 in which he ruptured both pectoral muscles.
"Dyl's playing on the wing but he'll have some time at centre as well to see how he goes in both [positions]. He hasn't played a lot of footy, he only played six rounds last year, so he needs to play some. He played some time last week in Mackay and he'll play extended minutes this week, probably a few more minutes than a lot of others to get his game time up and we'll see how he comes through the weekend going into England."
With a squad full of new faces, McGregor said it's important all players be give the chance to press their claims ahead of the NRL season,
"With a new coach and some new faces on the roster, you've got to give everyone an opportunity," he said.
"That's what this club's about at the moment, it's about rebuilding and giving guys the right chance. They've all worked really hard for the past 12 weeks and now there's an opportunity to play.
"We'll just see who comes up through the trials and then reward them in round one."
