The man got the car half way out before he noticed smoke coming out of the dashboard.
Albion Park Fire Brigade Station Commander Dennis Cornell said there was little time for the man to make decisions.
"The fire escalated quickly," Commander Cornell said.
"He had to remove himself from the car and unfortunatley the house became involved in the fire."
About 50 per cent of theKimbeth Crescent house was destroyed by the fire. The remainder was badly smoke damaged.
The man was the only one home at the time and was uninjured.
Fire crews from Albion Park, Shellharbour and Dapto attended the fire.
The cause of the fire is being investigated.
