The news comes a day after the Mercury reported Liberal candidate for the seat of Wollongong Cameron Walters identified the long-running saga as one of the ‘‘key issues’’ in the electorate.
The $25 million will come from the revised Illawarra Infrastructure Fund, which will be made up of $380 million from the long-term lease of Port Kembla.
“A Labor Government will ensure the Illawarra region gets its fair share from the sale of our port and use that money to invest in regional infrastructure such as the Unanderra train station,’’ Ms Hay said.
She spoke of the campaign mounted by local residents to keep the issue on the agenda.
“Labor’s commitment to reserve funding for this much needed upgrade of Unanderra train station is a major victory for our local community campaign,’’ Ms Hay said.
“There are many residents in Unanderra that have limited mobility and have great difficulty accessing the train platform – it strikes me as very silly to have wheelchair accessible trains on the South Coast Line if you can’t get up or down the stairs to the platform.
“The campaign for this upgrade has always been about making it easier for people with disabilities, people with prams and elderly people to access public transport.’’
