The new full-length documentary about Lawrence Hargrave will screen in the scientist's former homestead of Stanwell Park next month.
Father of Flight, developed by director Geoffrey Sykes, tells the story of aeronautical pioneer Hargrave and his research into flying machines.
Hargrave's research into wing structure, kites and bi-planes, as well as rotary engines, from 1885-1915, helped lay the foundations for stable, safe and efficient modern flying machines.
The film, which took more than a year to complete, comes just a month after Hargrave was flagged as a possible namesake for the second Sydney airport.
Mr Sykes said the airport should definitely be named after Australian legend Hargrave.
"Hargrave was one of the great scientists of his time and he's a terrific international figure: his story is just a great part of our history," Sykes said.
The film includes interviews with science and engineering experts such as Dr Karl Kruszelnicki and representatives of the Hargrave Society, as well as comments by well-known Fairfax Media columnist Peter Fitzsimons.
Sykes also used specially designed interiors and studio shots to recreate models and the work of Hargrave.
"It is important to bring science to life, and capture the character, family and ideals of Lawrence. He was such an idealist for world peace, and his death in 1915 was a tragedy," he said.
Wollongong musician and teacher Stephen Goldrik played Hargrave in the film.
"He is most convincing. Every word he says is Lawrence's own."
The director has had a long association with Hargrave's story.
Father of Flight will first screen at the Excelsior Hall, Thirroul Community Centre, on March 6 and 14. It will also show at Tradies Helensbugh on March 7 and 20 and at Hargrave's old residence, Hillcrest, at Stanwell Park, on March 27 and 28.
All screenings will start at 7.30pm and tickets cost $10. Tickets are available at trybooking.com or at the door.
