The internationally renowned ocean photographer took out the award for the second time with a stunning shot depicting the force of a breaking wave.
The image, titled Convection, was shot from a helicopter and was one of two of Mr Collins' photographs to make the competition's top 20 best shots.
Speaking to the Mercury ahead of his book launch which took place late last year, Mr Collins spoke of his desire to break away from traditional "surf" photography and take more of an artistic approach to his work.
"I'm trying to be more of an ocean artist, to convey the moods of the ocean and [capture] really beautiful waves in nice light," he said. "It's fascinating how much the water can change from day to day."
Mr Collins told his Facebook followers before the announcement he was "stoked" to have two images in the running for the award.
In 2012, Mr Collins took out the first, second and third places in the Nikon Australian Surf Photo of the Year, describing it as a "career highlight" at the time.
