Orienteering challenges kids of all ages to use skills in problem-solving, map reading, geography and athletics to navigate a designated course.
The SummerGong Series will feature five 'scatter events' in which kids compete with each other and other groups.
The events run from 15 minutes for a short-course event, up to about 45 minutes for the long-course challenge.
The opening event was last Saturday at Lake Illawarra and continues from 3pm-4pm this Saturday at Stanwell Park before challenges on February 28 at Flagstaff Hill, Wollongong, and on March 14 at Shellharbour, near the surf club.
Instruction and assistance is free at all the events with more information on the club's website at illawarrakareelahorienteers.com.
The SummerGong Series is ideal preparation before the annual South Coast Schools Orienteering Championships in May at Croom Sports Complex.
