Iconic stories from the Mount Kembla region will be showcased in an online initiative thanks to a much-needed funding boost.
Illawarra Coal's Dendrobium Community Enhancement Committee (DCEC) has provided more than $27,000 in funding to Mount Kembla Mining Heritage Inc to launch new website initiative Yesterday Stories, produced by Sandra Pires, from Why Documentaries.
Mount Kembla Mining Heritage Inc chairwoman Elizabeth Roberts said she was delighted that local people would now have the opportunity to record some of the stories belonging to Mount Kembla village.
"Some of the stories will be about the Mount Kembla Mine's significant history, others about people and incidents happening more recently in our mining community," she said.
"We will be looking for people to bring forward stories they think could be used. It's going to be a difficult challenge to choose a selection of 15 to 20 stories from those offered. The end result will mean you can click on parts of the website and learn about snippets of the past."
Yesterday Stories will feature short film clips of people, including school children telling or acting stories with opportunities for would-be filmmakers to learn the production skills from professionals.
An information session will be held at the Mt Kembla Heritage Centre on Saturday, March 7, from 1pm.
