The couple were on cloud nine at Panorama House after being treated to a $30,000 wedding extravaganza made possible by more than 30 local businesses.

The two had been entered in a competition by Ms Dingle's mother, Vicky Dingle, who had been told about a story in the Illawarra Mercury by a fellow nurse.

Tears flowed when they were told they had won last August and then again on Friday because it was something they had not dared think was possible.

The couple had initially planned to get married more than two years ago, but just weeks before the big day Mr Byrne was diagnosed with stage four Hodgkin lymphoma.

Everything was put on hold as he began treatment in hospital.

Not being able to work meant they were financially unable to contemplate a wedding.

They had given up hope until Donna Leak, of De'vine Wedding Events, was able to work some magic like a fairy godmother and, with the help of many business people, pull together a $30,000 wedding.

Mrs Leak said the idea was to encourage businesses to work together and do something for a local family affected by cancer.

She was inspired by a talk at a Business in Heels event by Maralyn Young, of Casa Mia.

The package came together within six weeks with the help of Monique Field heavily promoting it on the Business In Heels networks Facebook page.

Mr Byrne lost his father to liver cancer not long after he was diagnosed with cancer and still cannot get his head around just how much so many people have done for him and his family.

"It has come so quick," he said.

"It is a dream come true when you don't think there is any help out there and then something like this happens. What these people have done is just amazing. We really want to express how much this means to us and I can't believe how much these people put into it."

Mrs Byrne was so nervous on Friday because she said it was more than she could ever ask for.

"It was beautiful," she said.

"We cannot thank all the businesses involved enough. It has just been amazing. We could not have done this without them."

Mrs Leak is planning to do it again later this year with a competition open to anyone affected by a serious illness.

"I could not have done this without all the other businesses being so generous," she said.
