The charges follow an investigation by police from Lake Illawarra Local Area Command dating back to October 29, 2012.
According to police, on that day, the man fell inside his Darcy Road unit due to health issues.
A neighbour called emergency services and police gained entry through a window.
It is alleged while officers were rendering first aid to the man, they observed child-abuse material on his computer.
An ambulance took the man to hospital, after which police applied for a warrant to search his residence.
During the search, police seized four computers, 91 external hard drives, numerous DVDs, and other storage devices.
Specialist forensic investigators, along with detectives from Lake Illawarra Local Area Command, examined the contents of seized items.
Due to the large volume of data – up to 15,000 picture and video files – this process took many months.
On Thursday the man was given a future service court attendance notice to answer 89 counts of possess child-abuse material.
He is due to appear in Port Kembla Local Court on April 15.
