Mrs Sudmalis meet with Mr Abbott on Thursday telling him of the implications of the closure, which will mean the loss of 75 local jobs.
CMFEU secretary of the Pulp and Paper Workers District Alex Millar said the closure would result in the loss of 150 flow-on jobs and $20 million in regional household income in the local economy.
“The Shoalhaven Paper Mill is an icon of our community, producing high quality local paper products for almost 60 years,” Mrs Sudmalis said.
“The closure is a terrible blow for our community and economy.
“I discussed with Mr Abbott ways the government can support our 75 local workers and their families during this transition.
“The Prime Minister asked me to thank the workers of Shoalhaven Paper for the hard work they have done on producing some of the best security and passport paper in the world, and said his thoughts are with the 75 workers and their families after receiving this horrible news.”
The PM said the departments of Human Services and Industry had already contacted the local mill to offer support over the coming weeks and months.
“After speaking with the Minister for Human Services, I have also been told the mill has been offered visits from a Financial Information Service Officer (FISO) to conduct information sessions with affected employees,” Mrs Sudmalis said.
“This offer has been welcomed by management representatives who have indicated they will make contact with the department within the next week to schedule these sessions
“The department is also ready to provide staff for onsite support, including quick access to income support and government assistance, including employment services.
“This will include providing referrals to specialist staff including FISOs, so people can talk about individual financial circumstances. Social workers are also available if required.”
Mrs Sudmalis said any mill employees wanting further information or support should contact her office 4423 1782 or email ann.sudmalis.mp@aph.gov.au.
