The charges follow an investigation by Lake Illawarra Local Area Command police dating back to October 29, 2012.
On that day, the 70-year-old man had a health-related fall inside his Darcy Road unit.
A neighbour called emergency services and police gained entry through a window.
Officers allegedly saw the material while they were rendering first aid to the man.
They applied for a warrant to search the home after an ambulance took the man to hospital and seized four computers, 91 external hard drives, numerous DVDs and other storage devices.
Specialist forensic investigators, along with detectives from Lake Illawarra Local Area Command, examined the contents of seized items.
Due to the large volume of data - up to 15,000 picture and video files - this process took many months.
On Thursday, the man was given a future service court attendance notice to answer the 89 charges. He is due to appear in Port Kembla Local Court on April 15.
