Police closed the road at the intersection with Rowland Avenue about 9.30am after the woman, 28, was struck on a pedestrian crossing outside West Wollongong TAFE campus.
Wollongong Inspector Brian Wyver said the woman was about a quarter of the way across the road when she was hit by a black, northbound Nissan Juke.
She suffered extensive injuries to her hip, legs and head and was transported to Wollongong Hospital a short time ago.
The driver of the Nissan was also transported to hospital for mandatory blood alcohol testing.
Police have closed parts of Gladstone Avenue and Rowland Avenue to allow crime scene investigators to investigate.
