WITH regards to resident activist Stephen Spencer’s intent to tender out use of Stuart Park (Mercury February 25). Firstly, with this kneejerk reaction to goad council to ‘‘dip their bread in’’ because Skydive the Beach has the foresight and guts to go through an IPO and make a go of a business is typical of someone sitting on the sidelines waiting to cash in on someone’s hard work. I’m sure that if Skydive The Beach were doing it tough and asked for a reduction he would be in the opposite corner.

Furthermore, Skydive The Beach and Wollongong City Council have an agreement or contract that obviously is worth the paper it’s written on. If they were to chop and change the rates for leases based on their sentiment of how the business is going then where would it end?
Next Mr Spencer will advocate that if his neighbour wins lotto he will insist that he pays more rates because he’s rich?

Unless Australia Post Management start making a few more intelligent changes to the way that they do things, Australians will be kissing goodbye to yet another iconic industry.
I can see a letter delivery service of just one day a week, with a massive reduction of postmen and post offices, as the Australia Post organisation continues to hemorrhage money as it sits on its hands and watches the world of technology pass it by.
Australia Post could be getting a giant leap ahead of the rest simply by renting a fax / scanner / photo-copier to its customers who need a paper-based service.
For just $5 a week a combined unit could be made available to everyone.
Our senior citizens must also stop shedding tears over the way that things were done in the past, and get computer savvy in the same way our kids have.
There are plenty of good people who would be willing to help an elderly soul get used to online technology.

The deficit would come to a screeching halt – turn around – and evaporate if the government made rational decisions.
Tax revenue collected 2013-14 in Australia: local 3per cent, GST 12.1per cent, states 15.2per cent, Australian government 69.7per cent.
Of all taxes collected by the federal government, two-thirds went to Treasury and the other seventh (GST) to the states.
Yet the government can’t cope.
Joe, keep your hands out of our pockets, it is not our fault. The fault lies with government; close the loopholes and international bank accounts, the priority should be the people not the multi-nationals and the rich; return the country to responsible government.

Shellharbour City Council announced that it was to close the Shellharbour Village library and build a library in Shellcove. Apart from the disgraceful act of removing a long-established local facility, this was decided without the benefit of fully understanding the costs involved as it is revealed that council intends to buy a section of what will be the most expensive land in the Shellcove tourist precinct for a library.
As predicted, when councillors get involved in what they have no expertise, then financial disasters will happen. The millions spent on the unwanted Hub should have been used to proceed with the Roo Theatre renovation plan which included a library.
