Tech Savvy Seniors, an initiative between Telstra and the NSW government, is a program providing seniors with easy access to education on computers, tablets and smartphones.
Launched in January 2013, the program is now offered at 71 community colleges statewide.
On Monday, it was announced it would expand to reach 20,000 seniors over the next 18 months.
WEA Illawarra Tech Savvy Seniors teacher Liz Elliott said the initiative was beneficial to anyone wanting to keep up with the internet and advancing technologies.
"I think it's really good because a lot of them talk about how their grandkids can do stuff and they don't know what they're doing," Mrs Elliott said.
"Now they actually have an idea of what they're doing."
The focus of Monday's Tech Savvy Seniors class was tablets.
"Basically, some of them are looking at tablets, trying to get into the technology," Mrs Elliott said.
"Some of the families are buying them tablets and they don't tell them how to use them."
Mrs Elliott said the class explored practical skills like emailing, using the internet, sending and sharing photos as well as basic editing.
"Just for everyday sort of stuff, they're finding it really, really useful," she said.
Attending their first Tech Savvy Seniors class on Monday were Cynthia and John Michlmayr.
"We've got to keep up with technology because we've slipped way behind, we're in denial," Mrs Michlmayr said.
