Police, fire and rescue officers and the SES helped paramedics to load the 46-year-old man into the ambulance rescue helicopter after the accident.
Ambulance NSW Illawarra duty operations manager Inspector Norm Rees said the man was conscious after the accident, but had suspected spinal injuries including loss of movement and sensation in his legs.
‘‘He had indicators for spinal injury ... so we treated him and immobilised him,’’ he said.
‘‘We couldn’t get the vehicle up to him and we had a carry party with SES, fire and rescue and NSW Police to take him to the helicopter.’’
He was flown to Royal North Shore hospital, a spinal injuries specialist.
In another accident at on Thursday night, an eight-year-old girl was rushed to Wollongong Hospital in a semi-conscious state after falling off her bike at Woonona while not wearing a helmet.
