The aircraft, which is being donated to the Historical Aircraft Restoration Society by Qantas, is expected to arrive between 7.40am and 8am on Sunday, and will cause some disruption to traffic in Albion Park Rail.
The flight path will see the 747 cross the coast at North Wollongong. It will fly through to the airport at around 4000 feet.
Traffic will be stopped along Tongarra Road, the Illawarra Highway and the Princes Highway (northbound only) during its arrival.
The runway will be secured and there will be limited viewing on the eastern side of the airfield along the fence line.
There will be temporary restricted airspace between 7.30am and 8.30am around the airport up to 4500 feet.
The restricted airspace covers an eight nautical mile circle around the airport – to Kiama in the south, Macquarie Pass in the west and Mount Kembla in the north.
Port Kembla and central parts of Wollongong are inside the restricted area, which includes a straight section out to the east over the ocean from Wollongong which will be the aircraft’s path of arrival.
The Civil Aviation Safety Authority is reminding people who fly drones – also known as remotely piloted aircraft or unmanned aerial vehicles – to keep them out of the temporary restricted airspace.
Drones must not be operated anywhere near the Illawarra airport before, during or after the 747 flight. People should not fly drones within 5.5 kilometres of an airport at any time.
