Instead, opposition spokesman for the Illawarra Ryan Park said the party’s focus would be on reviewing the rail timetable that had been the subject of controversy in the northern suburbs.
Thirroul residents believe the timetable has created congestion in their suburb, as commuters now drive there to catch the train – leaving their cars in the streets all day.
In late January, Transport Minister Gladys Berejiklian announced plans to build a 150-space car park at Thirroul.
The proposed car park will be on the western side of the rail line opposite the Bi-Lo car park.
Design and planning work is now under way and construction is expected to start in the next few months.
However, Mr Park said the project would not be a priority should Labor win the election.
‘‘I’m not convinced that a car park located five or six hundred metres from the station is going to take pressure off businesses around that area.’’
Mr Park said Labor’s commitment to review the timetable, made in October last year, could well reduce the number of commuters driving to Thirroul.
‘‘This is what needs to happen regardless, and this is what the government hasn’t recognised – a review of the South Coast timetable,’’ Mr Park said.
A car park was not off the table altogether, but it would be dependent on what the timetable review brought, Mr Park said.
