Called the "Technology Choice Program", it allows individual homes or a group of premises to switch from fibre to the node (FTTN) to the superior fibre to the premises (FTTP).
"It is expected that the current rollout will meet the bandwidth needs of the vast majority of broadband users, although some individuals and communities may have specific needs for higher speed broadband," the NBN Co website states.
"Hence, NBN Co is providing an opportunity for them to move to an alternate technology via the Technology Choice Program."
The option for individual premises to upgrade won't be available until April and residents need to wait until the rollout hits their area before applying.
While NBN Co states there are too many variables to set a firm price, its website states an "individual premises switch can range from a few thousand dollars to tens of thousands of dollars."
An area switch - where a range of premises opts for new technology - could run into the millions of dollars, the website states.
"The cost generally depends upon the size and complexity of the project," it says.
"As various factors will impact on the final cost to move to an alternate technology, NBN Co will assess every application individually so that these various factors can be taken into account and so that it can provide applicants with a high-level cost estimate.
"An application fee is payable to procure the cost estimate."
An individual premises will also pay a $300 application fee and a $300 "design and quote" fee.
"Once eligible, applicants pay an application fee in order to proceed to the next steps involving a detailed feasibility study to determine an estimated range for the cost of the build," the website states. "In certain circumstances, NBN Co reserves the right to waive the application and design fees at its discretion."
The upgrade can happen before or after construction but an NBN Co document said "the most cost-effective timing" was before detailing planning in an area started.
