The boxes, between Market and Smith streets, are an element of the Keira Street precinct plan and follow work to widen and flatten footpaths between Crown and Smith streets, encouraging more outdoor dining.
With 14,000 cars passing through daily, the popular "eat street" is one the city's most visible stretches.
The precinct plan is aimed at transforming Keira Street into a vibrant cosmopolitan "high street", with flow-on economic, social and cultural benefits.
