The move has been praised the NRMA, which identified completing the Albion Park Rail Bypass as a major priority in its November 2014 audit of the Princes Highway.
A re-elected Coalition government will start work on the $550 million Albion Park Rail bypass in its first term of government.
NSW Premier Mike Baird made the announcement outside C1 Speed Indoor Karting on Monday.
Mr Baird committed the funding for the long-awaited project, saying it was "a historic day for the Illawarra".
The money is contingent on the long-term lease of the electricity network.
“NRMA has been calling for the bypass for a long time,’’ NRMA President Kyle Loades said.
‘‘We are pleased that it will be built.
The 10km extension of the M1 Princes Motorway will provide a bypass of Albion Park Rail between Yallah and Oak Flats.
“Commuters are sick of the bottlenecks that regularly occur at Albion Park and the area comes to almost complete gridlock during peak holiday times, NRMA President Kyle Loades said.
“Building this bypass will provide long awaited relief for local communities, commuters and businesses.
“Improved travel times and expanded road capacity through Albion Park will enhance economic productivity and create increased employment opportunities in the region.’’
