Bunnings general manager property, Andrew Marks, confirmed on Wednesday the company had purchased a site for a new Bunnings Warehouse in Bellambi Lane.
"The proposed development, which is in the very early planning stages, will require the submission and approval of a development application," Mr Marks said.
"The development forms part of Bunnings' continuing investment and expansion in the Wollongong area."
Bunnings bought the 3.74 hectare site at Lot 101 Watts Lane, Russell Vale, last November for $4.6 million.
The industrial land was previously owned by Wollongong City Council and until recently was used as a council depot.
MMJ Real Estate Wollongong director of commercial sales, Tim Jones, who sold the site on behalf of council, told the Mercury in November the allotment had a two-street frontage with more than 200 metres fronting Bellambi Lane.
Mr Jones said it featured convenient access to Memorial Drive and was close to the South Coast railway line.
Northern Illawarra DIYers and tradies will have another option for hardware shopping with a new Masters store planned for Fairy Meadow.
Masters announced plans last December to build a $30 million store on the corner of Jardine Street and the Princes Highway.
The Masters store is expected to create more than 300 new local job opportunities, including more than 100 full-time, part-time and casual retail positions.
Masters is hoping to open the store in 2016.
