For the second straight week the Dragons endured a horror first half that saw the Raiders run in three tries in the opening 20 minutes but hit back with four unanswered tries to overrun the home side.
The Dragons were lucky to only trail 18-8 after an awful first half in which they completed just 13 of 20 sets at looked well off the pace.
A late try to Trent Merrin and a penalty goal to Gareth Widdop kept them in the game before their second half surge.
As promised online during the week the Red V faithful who made the trip down the Hume Highway unfurled their #Save Our Saints banner after the hashtag took Twitter by Storm on Thursday. And while the epic victory won't silence their critics completely it will provide some breathing space ahead of their round four match with Manly in Wollongong on Saturday.
Star fullback Josh Dugan made his 100th NRL appearance against the club that sacked him two years ago and was given a rousing reception by the home crowd when sin-binned in the 55th minute. But Dugan had the last laugh when he returning for the final 15 minutes as the Dragons posted the three final tries to snatch the late victory.
Boom rookie Euan Aitken earned a late call up to make his NRL debut at the expense of veteran recruit Dane Nielsen and earned high praise from McGregor for a strong performance.
The Dragons got off to an awful start when Gareth Widdop put a clearing kick out on the full in the sixth minute. The Raiders took a 6-0 lead from the ensuing set when Josh Hodgson forced his way over from dummy half. Sia Soliola strolled over from a Cornish short ball to extend lead to 12-0 after 16 minutes.
Things got worse for the Dragons minutes later when Eto Nabuli spilled the ball on a routine carry just 20 metres from his own line. The Raiders didn't waste a single tackle before making the Dragons pay with Blake Austin dummying his way across untouched directly from the scrum to push the lead out to 18-0 at the midpoint of the half.
To make matters worse Dylan Farrell inexplicably put the ensuing kickoff dead on the full with ball landing directly in front of the #Save Our Saints banner but it proved the Raiders last joy of the match.
Trent Merrin barged his way across two minutes before halftime with Widdop's conversion and after the siren penalty goal cutting the lead to 12 at 18-8.
The Dragons crossed first after the break through skipper Jason Nightingale with Widdop's conversion attempt bouncing off the upright and keeping the score at 18-12 with half an hour to play.
Jarrod Croker landed a penalty goal soon after to give the homeside and eight-point buffer heading into the final quarter.
The Dragons fate appeared sealed when Dugan was sin-binned for professional foul on Croker in the 55th minute but the Raiders made no use of the one-man advantage.
A brilliant solo try to Mitch Rein in the 69th minute set up the grandstand finish at 20-16; though Widdop was kicking himself at missing the routine conversion attempt.
He redeemed himself minutes later slotting the go-ahead goal after Joel Thompson's 74th minute try to seal the epic win.
