One door is closing but the opportunity to grow and spread the Illawarra Association for the Visual Arts' wings is exciting committee member Paula Gowans.
Nevertheless, the Kiama artist is disappointed time is almost up for IAVA at the Hanging Space Gallery.
The Woonona gallery is closing up shop after the IAVA's Underpinning exhibition finishes at the end of March.
Gowans and fellow committee member and artist Moira Kirkwood said the future was bright for the artist-run initiative that has a membership of professional artists and arts workers, most of whom live in the Illawarra.
"We will soon announce an expansion of exhibition options leading into the future. This new direction means the Woonona gallery will no longer be in use after March," Kirkwood said. Underpinning will be the final IAVA exhibition at this location."
Gowans said the options were endless and could include touring exhibitions.
"It will be great to perhaps do exhibitions at different venues, even as far as Sydney and Canberra ... to show off the talent of Illawarra artists.
"Hanging Space was a very useful space for contemporary artists as it allowed us to try out work and experiment with our art. I will miss it but I'm looking forwards to new and exciting times," she said.
Gowans said it was appropriate that the last exhibition at Hanging Space featured art from 10 past and present members of IAVA.
The artworks in Underpinning range from fine prints on pianola paper to sublime oil paintings, humorous sculptural objects to punchy modern drawings in charcoal.
The gallery, at Shop 1, 409-411 Princes Highway, Woonona, is open Monday to Friday, 9am-5pm, and Saturday, 9am-3pm. Entry from rear.
