Sadly, many never returned home. In many cases, their families don’t have a grave to visit where they can mourn. Some are commemorated by a name on a wall in a far away place; some with an unknown grave. The “lucky” ones have a headstone or cross in a country many of their descendants will never have the chance to visit.
This Friday, the Mercury will publish a special 40-page souvenir publication marking the Centenary of Anzac. It will feature our Illawarra Roll of Honour, containing the names of more than 800 who paid the ultimate sacrifice, as well as details on all the regional Anzac Day marches and services, a map showing the memorials to all servicemen and women, and a special focus on our Faces of Anzacs.
We would particularly like to thank and pay credit to illawarraremembers.com.au for allowing us to republish its content. Illawarra Remembers is a joint initiative of Wollongong, Shellharbour and Kiama councils which brought together and shared the stories of our region's servicemen and women.
