Wollongong boxer Mick Mlacic believes having Dragons great Shaun Timmins in his corner will prove his trump card when he fights for the NSW light-welterweight title on Friday night.
The former Australian lightweight champion will face Sydney southpaw Jese Ravudi for the state strap coming off the best preparation of his 11-fight career, after Timmins joined his camp as strength and conditioning coach.
Timmins, a long-time friend of Mlacic's coach Brad Gallagher, said he was happy to come on board.
"Boomy's [Gallagher] been a good mate of mine for years and he came to me and asked if I could help out," Timmins said.
"He'd never done any strength stuff, he'd just boxed, so I was happy to help him out.
"He was fit boxing-wise but we focused on the body-weight stuff, chin-ups, push-ups and focused on power. He's picked up a fair bit in the past eight weeks and you can tell in his body that he's carrying a bit more muscle. Hopefully he uses it on Friday night."
Mlacic believes the extra strength will give him the ammunition to earn a stoppage over Ravudi, who's taken to social media promising to knock Mlacic out inside the distance.
Mlacic is not typically one to talk smack but said Ravudi's fighting words lit a fire under him.
"He lost the fight there and then because that's when I got keen," Mlacic said.
"It's the fittest I've ever been in my life. We've had a great eight-week preparation and with all the extra strength work I'm ready to go for this fight. A fit and focused Mick Mlacic beats anyone in the country. I've proved that in the past. I was an Australian champ as an amateur and I won an Australia championship as a pro. I don't think winning this title is beyond me. This guy's in trouble, he's not going to stop me and I'm going to knock him out."
Friday's bout at Club Punchbowl will be Mlacic's fourth fight since returning from a 10-year lay-off.
"I always knew it'd be at least four fights to have him at his best after a 10-year break," Gallagher said.
"He's primed and ready and the addition of Timmo to do strength and conditioning with him has him ready to go. They can't throw anything at us we can't handle."
