The Wanderers will hopefully make a marquee player the top priority to rebuild as an A-League force next season.
There are still five games left and the club will fight for every point, after regaining ground on Newcastle with the 4-1 win over Brisbane on Wednesday, just days after losing to the Jets at home.
But planning is well under-way among the Wanderers management and coach Tony Popovic and finding another Shinji Ono would be the perfect way to start the team's charge back to the top.
The A-League was once buzzing with the impact Ono and Alessandro Del Piero had on and off the field and a big new signing would be the perfect way to put what has been a difficult domestic campaign behind us.
In the meantime, the team showed great fighting spirit to respond to the Jets loss with a great performance in Brisbane.
Popa has been prepared to introduce young players into the team and the experience will be valuable for them, now we've just got to keep fighting to stay off the bottom of the ladder.
It's been amazing to watch the rise of the Phoenix this season and they're going to be hard to stop from winning the league.
They're now four points clear of Sydney FC and Perth, while Melbourne Victory have the chance to make up ground with a game in hand.
Wellington have been impressive though, they're now a mobile, cohesive unit, whereas in past years they've lacked the dynamic play to compete with the top teams.
Ernie Merrick has done a wonderful job of building them into a force, with Nathan Burns really rising to another level this season.
Dutch midfielder Roly Bonevacia and striker Roy Krishna have also been superb.
There's sort of been a lingering expectation for the Phoenix to fall short, with Sydney FC and Melbourne Victory fighting it out, with Perth also in the mix.
But the Phoenix haven't been beaten since they came to Wanderland in February and they've since had two draws and four wins to march to the top.
Wellington face Sydney on Sunday and then Victory next week, but both games are in New Zealand, providing a huge advantage in the battle for the title.
But it shows how quickly it all can change when you look at Brisbane's situation.
Only a couple of weeks ago, the Roar looked certain to overtake Melbourne City in the race for sixth and secure a finals place.
Now the Roar are facing a fight to stay in the hunt, after the Wanderers inflicted a 4-1 defeat on them.
There's a very real prospect the two grand final teams from last year - Wanderers and Roar - will miss out on play-offs action altogether.
While obviously it's disappointing not to be heading towards a finals campaign at the Wanderers, it shows the A-League continues to rise in standard and we have to improve as a club.
A marquee man to have in the squad again next season would be a perfect scenario.
What a great result for the Socceroos.
Sometimes scores can be misleading, but Australia deserved their draw against World Cup winners Germany and possibly even more.
Mile Jedinak's free kick to put Australia ahead showed the nation deserves its place among the best in the world.
The style of play and their willingness to take it to such a classy opponent - even if some of their heavy artillery wasn't used or came on as substitutes - shows the new era under Ange Postecoglou is working.
It's particularly impressive when you consider Luke DeVere, Matt McKay and Aaron Mooy were all involved as products of the A-League and Bailey Wright came on late, coming from the English lower leagues.
Now the task is for Australia to back it up with a win against Macedonia on Tuesday morning.
