Stand-in Dragons skipper Jason Nightingale has backed the push to play marquee games at bigger stadiums, saying it's the club's duty to provide the best atmosphere possible for fans.
It comes as St George-Illawarra prepare to host their 100th game at WIN Stadium when they take on Manly on Saturday night.
It will again be one of just four games in Wollongong this year in a continuation of the club's 'Right Game, Right Venue' policy which sees larger Sydney derbies played at Allianz Stadium and ANZ Stadium which can accommodate larger crowds.
The decision to reduce the number of games in Wollongong and Kogarah from six to four was met with fan anger last year and is one of the main issues at the heart of the fan-led #SaveOurSaints campaign.
It's also an issue facing the wider game, with conflicting views on the future of suburban grounds from NRL headquarters. Head of football Todd Greenberg and new executive Shane Richardson have both said that the NRL's future depends on utilising the larger stadiums. However, chief executive Dave Smith has since stated a desire to invest in smaller "boutique" grounds.
A Renown United junior, Nightingale debuted at Kogarah in 2007.
Having played in mid-season blockbusters like the annual Anzac Day clash with the Roosters at Allianz Stadium and the yearly Heritage Round match with Souths at the SCG, he feels the club has the best of both worlds.
"I love playing at WIN [Stadium], it's a great venue for sport and I'm really looking forward to running back out there on Saturday," Nightingale said.
"I love playing at Kogarah but I always love playing at the SFS as well.
"It's always been a great cauldron of atmosphere to watch and play rugby league at. The more people you can get into the ground the better. I think that's the main thing. When it comes to being a spectator and a player you want to get as many people into the ground as possible.
"If we're going to pack it out then pack it out. If we're not going to pack it out obviously we'd rather play at our local grounds with the atmosphere there."
Now in its second week, the #SaveOurSaints campaign has promised to flood the WIN Stadium hill with banners and shirts for Saturday's game. Members have gone to great lengths to stress the playing group has their 100 per cent support but Nightingale said his side can't let external factors play on their minds.
"It's nice to know it doesn't relate to us but, even if it did, what can we do?," he said.
"None of that stuff helps us play footy, so we just need to focus on what we're doing right here at training and let all that other stuff that is out of our control sort itself out."
