The day has been celebrated since 1967 and is designed to instil a love of reading in children.
Year 8 student Cailey Thurlow, from Mangerton, uses her love of reading to challenge herself.
She attends Kumon Advanced Learning Centre, to push herself academically.
Cailey first read an excerpt from the novel To Kill a Mockingbird at Kumon.
"It is my favourite book," Cailey said. "I don't like one genre more than another, I like any type of book."
To Kill a Mockingbird is not likely to be classed a children's book, but has inspired this 13-year-old.
"When I'm older I'd really like to be a lawyer," she said.
