Illawarra police officers Darren Kelly and Simon Day will pay tribute to fallen Diggers when they take on the infamous Kokoda Track in Papua New Guinea.
Detective Senior Sergeant Darren Kelly (Wollongong local area command) and Sergeant Simon Day (Lake Illawarra command) will join 60 police, fire and ambulance officers and 10 police Legatees as part of the 2015 NSW Police Legacy Kokoda Trek.
The pair have been training together to get ready for the arduous 96-kilometre hike, carrying 20-kilogram packs.
"We've walked Sublime Point and the Otford to Bundeena coastal track a few weeks back," Sen Sgt Kelly said.
"It won't be as bad as when they were doing it in World War II, but it'll still be a challenge and something to look forward to."
The group starts the track on April 15 and returns to Port Moresby on April 24, in time for the Anzac Day dawn service.
Sen Sgt Kelly said part of the reason for walking the Kokoda Track was the Anzac Centenary.
"I'm originally from the UK. My grandfather was a RAF pilot in World War II and I've actually had his medals sent out so I can wear them when I finish off the track.
"It's something sentimental for us," Sen Sgt Kelly said.
Growing up, he learnt about the efforts of Australian Diggers and the sacrifice they made on the Kokoda Track in 1942 to stop the Japanese invading Australia.
Sgt Day said: "With the combination of difficult terrain, heat and mosquito it is going to be hard but it's obviously interesting at the same time."
