He may be the new kid on the block but Reverend Geoff Flynn is adamant this year's Easter Jazz Service at the Wesley Uniting Church on the Mall will live up to its lofty standards.
Mr Flynn, who only arrived in Wollongong last September, has never taken part in this type of service during his 20 years as a minister.
But having heard about the fine tradition of Easter jazz services in Wollongong, he has organised "something special" on Easter Sunday.
"This is my first Easter at the Church on the Mall. I'm keen to open up the doors to celebrate new life with an exciting jazz service," Mr Flynn said.
Two popular Illawarra jazz bands will perform at the April 5 service. Captain Bob's Stationhouse Seven will play in the Wesley Hall from 8am. There is plenty of room to dance along, and hot breakfasts on offer for $10.
The Belmore Basin Jazz Band and three guest solo singers will also perform a number of gospel classics at the 10am Easter Jazz Service.
"I've not had the opportunity during my 20 years of ministry to be involved in a Easter jazz service as such. I'm hoping to make it pretty special this year," Mr Flynn said.
"I have enjoyed connecting with the music community here in Wollongong and I'm sure people will enjoy the service.
"We hope the broader community will attend. It will be a Christian church service but it is meant to be celebratory."
