Our brains and bodies are creatures of habit. We like structure, order and routine. Departing from this routine seems an incomprehensible thought. Add a whole heap of weights, sweaty guys grunting and lifting big dumb-bells, rows of treadmills that look like drill sergeants ready for combat and the thought of trying new machines or breaking our routine becomes scary.
Breaking that routine will provide so many wonderful benefits and will stop you clock watching the last 10 minutes of your workout.
Try a few of these simple step to get the most out of your body and mind each workout:
- Warm up on a different machine each session.
- Try new resistance exercises, or alter the sets, repetitions and speed of each movement.
- Change up the time of day you train.
- Employ a trainer to give you a whole range of new ideas and exercises.
- Turn your workout on its head by starting your workout with the exercises you normally finish with.
- Try interval "sprint" training on your cardio machines instead of doing that long sloggy 90 minutes on the same piece of equipment.
The possibilities are endless, but one thing is for certain: the same routine is OK but variety will provide so many more benefits. Happy training!
